Or in my case, I have the kindle keyboard and can connect it to the computer
and copy the books off of it.

Actually, if you have the Kindle for PC program installed, Amazon should
give you an option to download the Kindle book to your PC or your iDevice. I
have a folder called My Kindle Content that has Kindle books in it. Of
course, they are named with numbers so you can't tell what they are by title
but they are on my PC.

What I don't like about the Kindle app is, your books get stored in the
Kindle cloud. You can either store them on your device or in the cloud but
you cannot store them on your computer. That means you cannot copy them to
your external hard drive. The cloud is fine as long as you have access to
it.
