I've found that opening the native Apple Maps and turning Tracking on with headings will do what you want. You have to stay in the app for this to work though. It works for me very well and timely. I have LTE so the data is transfered and updated very quickly. It does do a good job for the road you are on, or turn onto, but does not give info on streets you cross. Apple maps on my Iphone 4s can plan a route, but that's about it.
