I hope the distance thing got answered.

Digit-Eyes said in some early documentation that the clicks would become
faster as it focused on the barcode.  I've never really noticed that.  The
clicking is just to let you know it is scaning for the barcode.
With the iPod touch 5th gen, or the iPhone 5, I find about 6 to 8 inches
works for most bar codes.  You have to stay steady for several seconds for
it to grab the code.

a totally blind person too, its a bit hard to learn to use a camera, 
but as you say its definitely doable.

So the question, if I'm not mistaken digit eyes is the one that clicks, 
do you wait for the click to move the camera further or closer?
