Hi Teresa, Voice Compass in fact uses the built-in compass, but I prefer it for quick use because the recorded human voice gives you very simple announcements whereas the stock compass app uses Voiceover speech and the announcements starts with the degrees followed by the direction, but it's much more sensitive since the degrees are spoken so the slightest movement to either side will change it, e.g. 91 degrees eas, 94 degrees east, 98 degrees east etc. Once you get past 112 degrees which is still spoken as "East" you then get into "116 degrees Southeast", all the way to 157 degrees Southeast until it switches to "South". I just like the simpler directional announcements of Voice Compass without the degrees spoken, I can still check them if I want by touching the screen.
