Hi Wren,

Any of the apps you mentioned, Tap Tap See, Talking Goggles and Cam Find do
their own recognition. Talking Goggles will do actual OCR and it uses Google
services a lot but I don't know exactly what all is done by Google behind
the scenes since I am more interested in results rather then how they come
about.
Tap Tap See as far as I know does not perform OCR, but it uses crowd
sourcing which means an actual person may get to see your picture and return
the result. Tap Tap See will recognize logos, packages and so on, but also
can describe pictures with some success or even a T-Shirt with a print or
word on it. I have a fairly large, framed painting of a mountain landscape
with sky and an eagle. When I took a picture of that Tap Tap See came back
and said "Painting with mountain and flying eagle". It can also import
pictures from your camera roll and give a description and some people have
reported it is quite good at colour identification as well. I took a picture
of a T-Shirt the other day and it came back and said "Blue Jack Wolfskin
T-Shirt" which ended up being correct even though I had totally forgotten I
still had a Jack Wolfskin T-Shirt (for those who don't know, Jack Wolfskin
is about as popular a brand in Germany and other European countries as North
Face is in the US and Canada)
I have Cam Find on my phone, but haven't hardly used it so I can't say much
about.

As a conclusion I would say that Tap Tap See is almost a must-have for any
blind iPhone user. I think next on your list should be Talking goggles since
it can do OCR (not full pages, but bits of it), but I was able to read parts
of labels on bottles, drugs like on Tylonol and so on.
The good thing is that Tap Tap See is free and Talking Goggles is only 99
Cents, absolutely no reason not to grab the first and the second won't break
the bank, either. OK, and lastly, 4 examples of what Tap Tap See gave me
when I told it to recognize the same picture in my camera roll. I took the
picture off my deck and what you see when you look that direction is the
side of my house, at the end of it mounted up high my satellite dish and
about 10 feet from the house is the trunk of my cherry tree which covers
pretty much the entire 20 or 25 feet between my house and the fence to my
neighbour's property. So, here is what Tap Tap See told me:

1. Bell ExpressVue Satellite Dish - this is absolutely and totally accurate
2. Green leaves
3. Outside satellite dish
4. Grey satellite dish

As I said, these results are not different because of different lighting or
me pointing the phone ever so slightly in a different direction, I took one
picture and ran it through Tap Tap See 4 times right one time after the
other. To me this screams crowd sourcing with different people focusing on
different things with 3 out of 4 noticing the satellite dish. Nobody,
however, said Cherry Tree although the tree is currently full of cherries
which from what a sighted friend told me are easily visible.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Re: Talking Goggles

Hi all, and thank you so much for the help. My question is going to be a
little different but still pertains to talking Goggles. Actually it is a
couple of questions or maybe three and they will be different. I am telling
you now, so if you want to not read any further you can stop. Smile. I have
never really used talking Goggles, TapTapSee, or CamFind much. I don't know
too much about them. So my question is are these. After you let the app see
the after you take the picture with the app, do you need to put it into an
OCR app so that it can read it. If so how do I import the picture. Also is
it supposed to read more than just what the item is what it speaks after you
take the picture, and then are you supposed to put it in the in the OCR app
to read the directions? I am sorry for the messed up dictation. I just can't
seem to talk. My last question is are these apps and specifically talking
Goggles since that is what we are discussing, supposed to read the
instructions on the bags, can't, bottles, boxes, etc. Thank you again God
bless, wren

Sometimes, I can get the OCR app to read more then just a few words that
Talking Goggle will give me. HTH.
