Hi Kirstin, Once a call started, triple click home will not work to turn off Voiceover. However, a 3-finger double tap to turn speech off does indeed work and it definitely is the best work-around since it doesn't matter if the screen locks, it also works in the lock screen, so you only have to pus the home button to wake up you rphone, then do another 3-finger double tap and speech will come on again. I find this is a very reliable gesture for me and I suggest you just practice it because one thing you don't want to do is accidently do a 2-finger double tap since that would hang up your call.
I am glad that at least one person agrees with me that Voiceover should be quiet during a call, it seems that a lot of people complain that it jabbers away when a text or push comes in, but when I suggested to write to Apple to ask that that is fixed everybody gets in a huff. Yes, turning off having text messages spoken automatically or in the lock screen may not read them during a call, but if I am not in a call I do want them read automatically so to me having to turn off this feature is an unacceptable compromise ad having to mute speech is acceptable, but only just. Good luck with the 3-finger double tap, I'm sure with a bit of practice you will find it works very well. I also find it useful if I want to record an audio note or some video, for example, where I don't want Voiceover to talk and be recorded when I touch the Stop button and so on. I just turn speech off when I am in the camera app and have switched to video mode, then I use a 2-finger double tap or the volume key to start and stop video recording.
