When I entered the iPhone world earlier this year, I intentionally
rejected the Otterbox and Lifeproof cases. Otterbox clamps the phone
into the case. This often scratches the glass because the phone
eventually doesn’t stay still in the clamps, as was mentioned.
Regarding Lifeproof cases, Reviewers on Amazon complain that they have
difficulty hearing callers or the callers have difficulty hearing
them. As a VoiceOver user, I did not want the possibility of having
impaired audio output of my phone. I reasoned that if a case was
waterproof, it likely needed to be in a tight enclosure, which could
interfere with audio input and output. I chose a Ballistic Hard Core
case. The iPhone is sandwiched tightly between two very hard and
thick pieces of plastic that hold the phone in place. The two pieces
are sealed so tightly, they require a screwdriver to pry them open.
When my SIM card failed and needed replacing, the woman at the cell
phone store handed the phone over to her male manager who used tools
and his brute strength to open the case. There is a soft shell
rubberized case that goes over the hard core case for extra
protection. It is about as bulky as the Otterbox, but I am confident
that my phone will survive almost any drop or tumble. My iPhone is a
valuable tool that is now highly protected from damage. It doesn’t
flip out of my slim fit hipster jeans with two fingers, but I want a
reliable tool that will last for years.
