Thanks Ricardo for the reply--Apple's motives seems sensible. Am I correct
in my understanding that even if I attach my iPod to my computer and
navigate to the list of installed apps, I still can't remove the app of
interest with the use of iTunes? I tried but could not find a way of doing
so from within iTunes though it seems very possible.

Hi,

It is completely removed. Apple just keeps a list of apps you’ve
purchased/installed in case you would like to download it again. This is
how they allow you to redownload something without being charged again.
