I used the following path to find the compact voice setting: Settings, general, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Use compact voice.
Sometimes VoiceOver gets stuck, so it is advisable to read the screen from bottom to top, Which means a 4-finger tap at bottom of screen followed by successive swipes to the left.
