Russ, There is plenty of space even with an iPhone in a dock, some docks even have enough space to accommodate a snug fitting case. Anyhow, I highly recommend that you just go to a store like Best Buy or an Apple Store if you have one closeby and just ask the staff to show you some docks. Most stores have several out and on display so if you bring your iPod Touch you can try them right there, see how the iPod fits, how it sounds etc.
If this is not an option then just order from the online Apple Store or Amazon, just go with a merchant who offers a good return policy and then be careful when you unpack it so that if you do want to send it back you can put everything back together exactly as it was. The only thing that is different is that the iPod Touch is thinner than the iPhone 5 and that the edges in the back are slightly rounded instead of being square like on the iPhone. But any dock that works for the iPhone 5 should work for the iPod Touch Fifth Gen.
