Sieghard, no, I have not gotten contacts synced. I have contacts on in both devices under account as you directed. I also put my info into the iPad in case it needed that to sync. Now I am waiting. Maybe iCloud needs to do the sync?

I can guarantee that iOS doesn't randomly delete emails whether read or unread. Were you able to turn on Contacts and get them to sync to your iPad?
