I try not to hold too much outstanding mail on the iPhone if I can help it, but do as follows.
First, if I got right to the top where the back button is and got past where it says inbox(##) edit and search; I usually the get the first mail item if I flick right past that. in short, I got right to the top and repeatedly flick right. So for the end, I start at the bottom right corner of the screen which is the compose button I think, and rapidly flick left from there past last updated and straight into the bottom of the list as a rule. I find this tends to work in other places too - appstore for instance. As for backing up from an open email, one can do the two finger scrub to back up, or you have the previous and next buttons up near the top right so you can work down them in an orderly manner. I'm never sure if focus goes back to where you were last, when using the scrub gesture even now.
