Hi David, Definitely important for Ari to check this. However, if Ari has an iPhone 4S running iOS 7 then this could well be a proximity sensor issue.
My 4S had some issue with this in iOS 6, but not to bad. Once I upgraded it was pretty bad, in fact, I sometimes received calls and they went to speakerphone and nothing I did short of plugging in a headset would switch the call to the earpiece including holding my phone to my ear, taking it away and putting it back or covering the proximity sensor with my hand. My setting was definitely on "Default" and it got so bad that Apple ended up replacing my phone in the last week of my Apple Care and when I had already ordered my 5S, in fact, my new unlocked 5S and the replacement 4S were delivered at the same time. Go to settings, general, accessibility, route incoming calls. It is the second to the last option under accessibility. When you activate the button, the choices will be default, headset, and speaker. It sounds like your phone is currently set on speaker. Default means headset if a headset is plugged in, earpiece speaker if the proximity sensor detects an object, or speaker if the proximity sensor does not detect any object.
