are you using an IMAP account such as Gmail? You’ll probably have to go into the Gmail settings and change “archive” to “delete”. Go to settings, mail, contacts, etc. and find your IMAP account and double-tap on it. Go to the button with your email address and double-tap. Double-tap on the advanced button. In this screen there will be a mailbox behaviors section. Choose “deleted messages folder” for your discarded messages. Press back and then press done.
