First, be sure you have the flash on, as this seems to help a whole lot. Second, try different distances. My iPhone5 seems to like six to ten inches away, but different cameras may need slightly different distances. If possible, get an item and have someone tell you where the code is, then practice scanning that so you can get a feel for where the phone needs to be to get a good scan.
