I didn't ask the original question, but I noticed that it said the
following on the iTunes Match FAQ at
http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air
when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the
iCloud download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from
iCloud as they download and will store them so that you can listen to
them later even if you don’t have a network connection. Apple TV only
streams songs.

Hi there,
iTunes Match is what you want.
You do not need to have an item downloaded to your phone in order to play it.
NOt sure where that info came from but rest assured that iTunes Match is meant
specifically for this sort of thing.
Best of luck and have a great day / evening!

Hi,
My music library exceeds the storage space on my IPhone. I have currently
handled this by selecting particular songs to sync between ITunes and my
phone. What I'd like to do is play my music on my IPhone without having to
load it on the phone.
I thought ITunes Match might work but from what I read there is not an
option to play a song without loading it onto my IPhone. Is there another
app or service that will do this?
Thanks
