Interesting,

For me the song does not get downloaded unless I tap the download button next 
to it.

Just tried it before I posted last night to make sure. :)

In my experience this is definitely not the case.  For example,  Go to 
settings/general/usage, and make sure you have no music on your device.  If 
there is, hit the edit button in the music section of usage, and delete all 
music.    Now, play 3 songs via iTunes match.  Finally, go to 
settings/general/about, and you will see that there are now 3 songs on your 
device.  I think it just streams while songs you play are being downloaded.
