Agreed Mary. Now that the free Spotify is out for iOS, there's nothing that comes close. It's true that on the iPad you can nominate a specific song to be played which is amazing. I had the iPad going through the Apple TV on Airplay the other night, typing in the names of songs I hadn't heard for years and having them play instantly in full. Amazing stuff for a free service. But even on the iPhone, you can nominate a specific artist, and music from that artist and that artist alone is put on shuffle.
