Thank you, everyone, for the thoughtful replies to my question. I
never thought my post would elicit so many responses in such a short
time.

I asked for information about using iPhones without cases because my
case recently broke at its structurally weakest spot, and I thought
before replacing it I would consider the possibility of using my
iPhone in unprotected mode, so to speak. Armed with your opinions and
suggestions about how to keep an iPhone safe without resorting to a
case, I went to my dealer today to look at cases but also quite
seriously thinking of not buying one. I ended up with a new case
because I was entitled to one replacement case at no charge during the
life of my contract, an option I didn't know I could exercise.
Although I have a new case, I may take the iPhone out to see how I
like using it that way. Even if I decide to keep it in its case, you
have provided a wealth of insights about working with an unclothed
iPhone which other users may find helpful down the road. Yours is the
kind of advice that makes the VIPhone list so valuable.
