Hi Brian, You can share the same Apple ID for purchases but each have your own ID for iCloud. That's how my family does it, and it works great. We can share apps, books, etc., but we can each back up separately and have our own contacts, iMessage and FaceTime each other, and have our own notes. You can get your own iCloud addresses easily through iCloud Settings and use those IDs for iCloud.
