Jenny, I have only purchased one kindle book so far, but the process, as I best recall, is different from adding it to the shopping cart.
You use the buy button, and the book is downloaded to whatever device you have selected. I have both an iphone 5s and iPad Mini. The book will also download to other devices you have. I purchased the book on my PC. Sorry I can not provide any more help than this.
