I have not seen the Giraffe Reader yet, but in my correspondence with Sam, it sounds like it is designed to be used with the iPhone not in a case. I have the Otterbox Defender case and don't want to have to take it out of the case just to do a scan, so he is looking into making one that will fit an iphone using the Otterbox case. The price here in the United States is going to be $45.00, which is a bit more than the StandScan. But, I am willing to at least try one out if he can make that adjustment. He has a generous 60-day return policy.

It takes up very little space when erected and would be practical to use in a restaurant to read the menu. It is not as good a solution as the StandScan Pro, but it has its place. I suspect I'm going to get much more use out of the Giraffe Reader than the StandScan Pro because I can carry it in my handbag rather than in a backpack. It's maybe a female thing, or just my age, but I don't like carrying a backpack everywhere.
