Does this work in the Kindle app, too? I have trouble pulling up my Library when I'm reading a book.

If you double-tap that, you won't get an edit field. You've probably been double-tapping on the address field, and if you double-tap that, you'll be editing your address. The clock area is just fine for the purpose of activating your controls. in fact, if you have VO hints turned on, you'll get the message when you touch the status bar that you can double-tap on it to show the page controls.
