I have an iPhone 5 and I'm getting great battery life in iOS 7.1. I
have background app refresh on, but only for one app: Fantastical 2,
for calendar and reminders. I live and die by my calendar, so don't
see any reason to turn that app refresh off. I have also turned off
those apps that don't need/use location services. In fact, I think I
may be getting better battery use than before the update. Before iOS
7.1, I would use 50 to 70 percent battery during a 12 hour day. After
the update, I use an average of 30 to 50 percent. I use Bluetooth at
times with my braille display, some GPS on the bus when finding out
what interesection I am at, and heavy use during lunch and on the way
home. Probably not as much as others, but that's what I do. From my
perspective, there's no big reason not to update, your milage may vary
though.

Best,
Wayne
