One thing I was unknowingly losing battery life to was Bluetooth. After I updated to 7.1, it turned on Bluetooth which I have off most of the time. Once I discovered that and shut it off again, my battery life improved markedly. I have background app refresh turned off. So far, I've been pretty happy with my battery life on my new 5S.
