I remember looking at reviews of this headset, and it got really positive ones. If you got this from a third-party seller, I might try a different one. Recently, I had to return some earbuds that worked well, except for the iPhone control. The sellers got great feedback, which is why I was surprised to receive a partially-working product. I must have just recieved a dud. I would have tried getting a refund, if I were you, but it might be too late now. I was able to get a full refund, because my item arrived damaged.
