I think she is talking about setting the router so that it is impossible to make changes to its settings wirelessly. We do need to know the specific model of the router in order to give specifics.

In general, you should find something on the administrative or system settings page that will say allow changes to be made to the setup remotely. On some routers, this is a checkbox which should be unchecked.

Also, another known vulnerability in routers is the WPS that pushes settings to a wireless device. This is easily hackable, and it should be disabled.

Subject: Re: OT? Turning The Remote Feature Off On One's router?

I'm not familiar with this term. What do you mean by your router's
remote feature? Do you mean you want to turn off it's wifi radio? It
would help to know what brand of router you're talking about. For
example, on my NetGear and LinkSys/Cisco routers, I use my web browser
to log into the router's web interface at 192.168.1.1.

BTW, I do think this is OT, but those questions are best left to the
moderators.

Hello Folks,

I am not sure if one would consider this OT, but with all of the security
risks recently, I was wondering if someone on this list can direct me on how
to check and if necessary turn off the remote feature in my router I know
the router's address, so that's not the issue. Once this page is open, where would one look to find this option? Please forgive me if this is considered OT, but I wasn't sure where to post this message, since it could affect all
of us either running Macs, PCs, or our iOS devices.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Eileen
