Changing the default password is very important as in most cases it is
possible for the right tech to discover what kind of router you have without
even being logged into your network. Knowing this information makes it
easier to hack into it if one so desires.

Subject: Re: OT? Turning The Remote Feature Off On One's router?

Hi,

I believe she is talking about the remote administration option, that would
allow someone to configure the router from outside the local intranet.

Both wireless and hardwired connections to your router are considered
intranet and thus allow you to have access to the web admin interface of the
router.

In any event, I promise you that this setting is off by default on all
routers, so unless you enabled it yourself, fear not, I won't be changing
your password from here anytime soon.

And I agree 100% about changing the default router password.

Best,

the risk that if you mess things up that when the new settings go into
effect you'll lose you're connection to the router, but if you know what
you're doing, this shouldn't be a problem. I even have an app on my iPhone
to control my NetGear router.
