Changing the default password is very important as in most cases it is possible for the right tech to discover what kind of router you have without even being logged into your network. Knowing this information makes it easier to hack into it if one so desires.

Both wireless and hardwired connections to your router are considered intranet and thus allow you to have access to the web admin interface of the router.
