It really is a simple process, all you have to do is go to Settings and then
find Touch ID and Passcode just below Sounds.

Once you double tap find where you can turn Passcode on as this has to be
your first step. It will ask you to enter a 4 digit number on a keypad just
like the phone keypad. If you can dial a phone number you will have no
problems. After you enter the last digit it will ask you to reenter the same
4 digits to confirm and once that is done Passcode will be active.

You can now find where it says "Require Passcode". By default this is set to
immediately, if you double tap on this you can choose from a number of
times, e.g. if you select 5 minutes it means that if you lock your phone and
then try to unlock in less than 5 minutes you will not be asked for a
passcode, only if more than 5 minutes have passed since your last unlock
will you be asked to put in your passcode.

I would also suggest you leave it on Simple Passcode, if you turn this off
you have the option to enter a longer passcode like a 5, 6 or I think even 7
or 8 digit passcode.

Lastly, just go to where the fingerprints heading is, then swipe right to
"Adda Fingerprint" and double tap it.

Voiceover will tell you to place your finger on the home key, you put it on
the home key and lift it off, the phone will vibrate briefly to indicate it
has taken a reading.

Now repeat this, you will be asked to do this probably 10 or so times and
it's a good idea to you're your finger around a bit, capture the edges and
different parts. Don't use the very tip of your finger too much, more the
area between the tip and the first joint.

There really is nothing you can mess up here, worst case is that it won't
read your fingerprint well and you'll be asked to put in your passcode.

You can add up to 5 fingers or what I do is that I use at least 3 or 4 of
the spots to reenter my thumb which I use to unlock my phone. The more often
you register your print the better your chances it will work.

As I said, Voiceover will tell you what to do, at some point during the
registration it may say that you should now capture the edges of your finger
and you may have to tap on a continue button and do a few more readings,
once Touch Id has captured enough good readings it will tell you that it's
ready and that you can now use your finger to unlock the phone.

To unlock, push the home button, release it and leave your finger on the
home button for another second or so, the phone should unlock.

Sieghard

Thanks very much for your help, would you be happy to talk to me off list if
you have done this already?

I am guessing that it is a wizard in the settings but I don't want to screw
my phone up otherwise it will hhave to go back to Apple to be unlocked and
then I would expect a charge and some way of proving that it is mine.

A passcode is always required if you enable this level of security, you
cannot add fingerprints without first setting a passcode.

Also, if you do add Fingerprints and I really don't know why anybody who has
a 5S would not do this as it works fantastically, you still have to remember
that if you reboot your iPhone that the first time you unlock it you do have
to use the passcode.

The same is true if you try to unlock with your fingerprint and after 3
tries it does not work, at that point it will default back to the passcode.

Hi friends,

I need to consider some security on my IPhone 5s, just wondering what people
have found the best way forward, a pass code or fingerprint recognission?

Can you overwrite the fingerprint recognission with a pass code if required
for example?

Many thanks in anticipation,
