No, just picking up the phone and putting it to your ear will not pick up a call, you do have to use the 2-finger double tap as you said or double tap on the Answer button. There is a setting in SIRI which, if it is turned on, is supposed to start SIRI if you bring the phone up to your ear, but I have never been able to get this to work although it does apparently work for some people.
