I am using the 5S as well. usually I can’t do that and I have to wait for the other party to hang up or unlock the screen first to terminate the call.

Into Isaac no you don't have to unlock the screen talking up a call, you can double tap on it twice while the screen is locked and it will hang up that is with using a 5S Curnalia's, I'm not for sure which phone you're using but I am pretty sure with the five it'll work this way as well.
