The two typing modes both have their advantages. Standard typing works a
little better when your trying to type in a car or bus that's bouncing around.

  Connie,

If you really want to just explore the screen and things like the numeric
keypad and onscreen keyboard it may be easier to set your typing mode to
standard. Of course you may already have it set to that as it is the standard.
The other option here is touch typing. If you set it to touch typing then you
can touch the screen all you want to find things, but if you have the keypad on
the screen or the virtual keyboard then whatever you touch is being typed as
soon as you lift your finger off the screen. Most people find this to be more
efficient and faster. In standard typing nothing happens if you lift the finger
off the screen. If, for example, you bring up the telephone keypad and touch
the 5 (it should have a dot if you have the tactile screen protector) then you
would have to double tap on the screen before it is being entered/typed. You
can also find the number you want, leave your finger on it and tap the screen
with a second finger to type it. This is what is called a split tap.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

If you want to place a call, bring up the Phone app and double tap on the
Keypad tab on the bottom of the screen. You'll now have a telephone style
keypad on the touch screen. As Alex says, you can explore the screen just by
moving your finger around on the screen. VoiceOver will tell you as you touch
the numbers and other objects on the screen.

Practice only lets you practice gestures, it does not tell you anything
about what is on the screen. When you touch something on the screen while not
in practice mode, that item is spoken as is any hint it has. I'm not sure I
follow your question - if you know the iPod, then you know the iPhone. For
dialing, just use the same keyboard input you are used to; touch the numbers
until you find the right one, then either tap with another finger, double tap,
or lift your finger, depending on your setting.

      Hello to all,

Is there a way I can explore my iPhone to find out where the different
buttons are? I went into settings. Then clicked on general, then
accessibility. Finally, I clicked on voice over. In that section there is
voiceover practice. I clicked on voiceover practice. I have the hang of
flicking and tapping from my iPod. When I touch any of the dots on my phone
all it says is"touch select item under your finger."Maybe I don't have things
set up correctly? I'm trying to find out where the numbers are and find out
what the different buttons are when I want to make a call. Sorry if I'm not
being clear here. Thank you.
