Patti, The only way I know to find out when the new apple TV models are out or coming, is to follow the sites like macRumors and the like. Basically, all the apple related blogs. If you have twitter, it's pretty easy but of course you can just go there. :-)
As best as I can see from what's been going around, the only thing that those of us with prior generations of apple TV's won't be able to do, is play content in HD. You can still play content that is HD only, it will just look different on screen for folks who can see. And, you'll get the new oS updates just like normal to the generation of Apple TV that you have. We have two; and I can't see the need to purchase newer models when it's basically the same box; though I would if for some reason there was going to be real changes to my current viewing experience that made it necessary.
