Hello Ari, You are most welcome.
Yes, the method I described will definitely preserve Playlists and should preserve play counts, also. Mark, thank you for your very detailed post. Since I am pretty anal about where things go in my music folder, this method seems like it will work the best for me. I don't have too large a music library, so it shouldn't be too difficult if I have to help the new iTunes locate my files. By the way, will this method preserve playlists and play counts? Import a disk onto the iTunes player as this will create a music folder in iTunes media which is inside of the iTunes folder which is found inside of the windows music folder. Two. Now copy and paste The folders that are found inside of your back up music folder of the iTunes media folder into the new music folder inside of iTunes media. Three. Now copy and paste those folders an files from the new music folder onto the itunes player. Hope that helps, let me know if you have questions. Hello Robert, Holding down the Shift key as you open iTunes allows you to select and/or create different iTunes Libraries. Hello Ari, I understand your question. The short answer with the best case scenario, is that, since your files will be located on a slightly different path than they were on the original computer, you will need to tell iTunes where to find them. As it turns out, this is quite easy and, assuming that your files are organized, relative to each other, as they were on the original PC, you only need to point iTunes to a few of the files and then iTunes will then be able to automatically locate the rest. Now keep in mind, I said this is the short answer, with the best case scenario. Very generally speaking, here is what you should do: 1. After installing iTunes on the new computer, while holding down the Shift key, open iTunes and when prompted, select the iTunes Library file with the extension .ITL. 2. See if you get lucky by attempting to play one of the media files from within iTunes. If you're lucky, the file will play and you're all done. Assuming that you get an error when attempting to play a file, however, proceed to step 3. 3. When you attempt to play a file that is no longer in the expected location, an iTunes dialog box will appear asking if you would like to locate the file. Select this option and, using Windows Explorer from within iTunes, select the correct file associated with the iTunes Library item entry. 4. Before closing, iTunes will ask if you would like it to search for other files in that same location. If you select this option, iTunes will automatically attempt to match its remaining broken Library item entries with files in that location. It may be necessary to repeat steps 3 and 4 several times until you have fully associated all of your files. Ari, hopefully this will, at least, get you started. I think I've copied all the necessary files into another location on my Windows 7 laptop so that I can transfer them to the Windows 8 one. I just need the iTunes folder from the My Music folder, correct? After that, where do I put it? I assume I install iTunes onto the new computer before transfering the library. My question is, because I have a slightly different file path than I did before, how do I tell the library on the new system point ! a few other locatioNs when lkoking for media? I handled all the organization of files on my old system, and didn't let iTunes do anything in terms of moving files or reorganizing or whatever. I just made it reference certain parts of my drive. I'd like to do the same on my new system, if I can. I hope this is making some kind of sense. I don't know of any better way to explain what I want to do or what I'm stuck on. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ari -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default.
