Hi Lee, Usually, it installs and preserves your settings without a problem. Having said that, you should always do an encrypted backup on your computer using iTunes just in case something goes wrong. I guess its my choice but, I never upgrade my phone without using iTunes. I just feel more comfortable that way. I have an iCloud backup which I don't count on and the encrypted backup on iTunes which preserves even my passwords.
Your choice but, remember that its always pays to be overly safe than sorry.
