So does mine (say O2UK on the status bar),  on all my devices, but I don't 
worry about it.  Mine still include old push-button Nokias.
But GiffGaff gets a mention on the home screen of Nokias anyway.

I think my last thought on Steve's inconsistent access, was to get a 
GiffGaff simm as it still uses the O2 network and see if that behaves the 
same.  We're wanting to test if it is the O2 simm he has which is at fault, 
as his O2 people suggest.

I have a Giffgaff Sim and when Voiceover reads out the Carrier name at top 
right of my iPhone screen, it reads out "O2" not The word Giffgaff printed
