This feature was introduced in iOS 7 and I've been using it for the last year. It's great. I realise this isn't possible for everyone, but I use a separate email account for list traffic. That way I can benefit from this feature without being notified every time I have another message from a list. It's a really good combination of tools and nice to have lists I check regularly right on the front And it's yet another benefit of iMap and server-side rules.
