Hi Sherry,
That is normal behavior. You double tap on a person/conversation and a window opens with your message history and at the bottom is a text box. Double tap on the text box and it goes into edit mode and the keyboard comes up so you can send another message in that conversation. I don’t generally keep conversations which go back over weeks or months, but I believe old messages may be hidden after they reach a certain age. If you have upgraded to iOS 8, you might also want to go to Settings and Messages and check how long your text messages are kept before they are automatically deleted. This is a new feature and you can set this to 30 days, 1 year or Forever.
