Hi Sherry,

If I open a conversation I am not usually in edit mode hence the text edit
field is at the bottom of the screen with no virtual keyboard showing and I
have to double tap on the text field to go into edit mode and bring up the
keyboard.
If your conversation opens in edit mode with the keyboard on the screen, just
try to double tap on the edit field until you hear "Insertion point at end",
then double tap and hold the Delete button to make sure there is absolutely
nothing in the text field including spaces. If it is empty the "Send" button
should be dimmed if you touch it. Then double tap on the Back button at the top
left or use the scrub gesture to back out of the conversation and go to the
main Messages screen. Now if you open the message again you should not be in
edit mode and the virtual keyboard should be hidden.
Let me know if that works for you.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thanks Christopher, this does work. But how can I get rid of the keyboard?
I only want to see the keyboard if I choose to type a message. I do not
want to see it all the time.

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

In addition to what was said below, even when the virtual keyboard is
up, I can still go back and review my previous exchange of text
messages. If I start from a recent message displayed on the screen, I
can swipe left and go back through the list of previous messages in
reverse chronological order. Note that using the various page advancing
gestures didn't have any effect and just exploring the screen or swiping
right from the top only got me to a few messages that were actually
displayed on the screen. Like I said, I had to swipe left from a message
on the screen to scroll back through previous messages.
