Thanks for this, I wasn't aware that there was no feedback for that amount of time, I was really lucky that I didn't mess up my IPhone 5 then. It went dead and I pressed the on/off button a few times. It did eventually come back and the update showed up in the details, I hope that I haven't messed something up though.

It is actually not dead, but doing the update and sighted people will see the Apple logo on the screen. It's important to leave it alone because if you try to push all sorts of buttons or even worse, do a reset by holding the power and home buttons you will most likely interrupt the update and this will mess up your phone really good. That is one reason why I often prefer to do updates via iTunes, you get a lot more feedback as to what is going on.
