Plus it's easy to do a quick encrypted backup before you start the
update. I don't use iTunes for every update, in fact, I did an OTA
update to get to IOS 8.1.1, but an update through iTunes definitely has
some advantages, and that's what I use for any major update.

I find using iTunes to be far less risky and far more reliable. Plus,

Hi Eden,
Maybe you already received an answer, but after a phone reboots during
the update it goes dead for at least 15 minutes. It is actually not
dead, but doing the update and sighted people will see the Apple logo on
the screen. It's important to leave it alone because if you try to push
all sorts of buttons or even worse, do a reset by holding the power and
home buttons you will most likely interrupt the update and this will
mess up your phone really good. That is one reason why I often prefer to
do updates via iTunes, you get a lot more feedback as to what is going on.
Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: updating iOS and apology
First, Raul, apologies for the thank you messages, won't happen again,
but now I have a bigger problem. I started updating with no problem,
but my phone said it was going to reboot, waited for 4 minutes, nothing,
try turning on phone, nothing. A little concerned here.
