Hello Ann, I have never purchased a ring tone from iTunes. However, I know that, were I you, I would copy the actual ring tone files, themselves, to any other location than the one in which iTunes places them. Doing this would allow you to access them without fear of having them removed.
As I write this I realize that you may not know how to determine file locations or how to change or modify how iTunes points to them. So, I will list the basic steps and then, if you're interested, you can follow up. Now, although I own a Mac and love it dearly, I sync all of my iOS devices via iTunes on my Windows computer. Regardless of which ever version of iTunes you use, the basic steps should be the same. Okay, here we go: 1. Create a folder on your computer in which you will place copies of your purchased ring tones. You may name it whatever you like so long as it makes sense to you. For example, I keep copies of all my ring tones, purchased or created in a folder called Mark's RingTones. 2. After you have downloaded/purchased the ring tone from Apple, find its entry in iTunes. You already know how to do this. 3. Perform what is essentially a right-mouse click on the item in iTunes and, from the resulting menu, select to show the file in Windows Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac). 4. Now, copy that file to the folder you created in step 1, listed above. Ann, at this point you can simply close iTunes and if all goes well, you won't need to use the copied files. However, if, for whatever reason, the files go missing again, you can add the files back to iTunes from the folder that you created in step 1, listed above. Now personally, I wouldn't wait for something to go wrong but, instead, I would perform the following steps, if for no other reason than to remove the iTunes Store from the proverbial equation. 1. >From within the Ring Tones area of iTunes, delete the purchased ring tone >entries. Make sure you have a copy of the files stored somewhere on your >computer. 2. >From the File menu, select add file. 3. >From the resulting Dialog box, locate the files in the folder that you created >in step 1, listed above, and add them back into iTunes. 4. Sync your iOS device. Good Luck, Ann, and Happy Ringing. Hi all, Something strange has been happening to my sister and me the last couple of days and I am at a loss as to how to proceed. A couple or so weeks ago I purchased a ring tone from the iTunes store and downloaded it with absolutely no problems as usual. Yesterday my sister and I both wanted some Christmas ring tones, so we proceeded to purchase and download them. We set them to be our default ringtones (we each only downloaded one) and everything was okay for a couple hours or so. Then suddenly hers...and then mine...began using the default ring tone, and the tones we bought were nowhere in sight! I have family sharing, so was the one who purchased hers, but that shouldn't have caused a problem, I wouldn't think. All the other ring tones I have purchased are with my other ring tones, but not the one I purchased yesterday evening. So, I went back to the iTunes store and purchased them again, even though the message came up that I had already purchased it and would I like to buy it again. I said yes because I was unable to find them anywhere...and the same thing happened...at least to me. As of tonight, my sister's second attempt at downloading hers is still holding, though it seems pretty precarious. When she checks in settings, sounds, ring tones, it shows that her default ring tone is the default IOS ring tone. But when she clicks on that, VoiceOver says that the Christmas ring tone is selected...and it still does play when her phone rings. But we are afraid that if we change her ring tone, it will disappear once more. When I go into my purchases in the iTunes store, it shows everything except tones! Why are they so elusive...and how can I keep tones from running away from me? Inquiring minds want to know! If anyone has any experiences, thoughts, suggestions, etc., etc., etc., I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks for taking the time to read.
