I'm not sure I was being critical, just commenting. I certainly would never
tell anyone how to handle their mail or phone call logs! I did set mine to
delete all messages I've deleted after 30 days. Maybe I wouldn't care either
how long they sat on the phone if I had a bigger capacity on this old phone. I
guess I also don't trust myself, and worry that I'd accidentally be wasting my
time wondering what was old and what was new. Speaking of that, I see I am
indeed notified if I have a message text or call and that appears in the doc
following the messages icon. That's succinct!
Meanwhile did I turn on a very disconcerting noise for when I hit the
lock screen button? Does one exist that sounds like the phone is shorting out?

Subject: Re: phone/mail settings

I don't spend a lot of time cleaning up my phone. I don't understand myself why
people don't let the phone and other services do more for them, like those
people who can't wait the 30 days to have Google remove messages in their trash
folder. That's just not something I want to spend my time doing. I think people
are free to use their phone any way they want, and it's best not to criticize
someone just because they choose to do something a bit differently.
