Hmmm...  Can you try running xvidtune?  That application uses the
XFree86 Video Mode Extension.  It seems to work for me over a remote
connection, but it might be failing in your case because the graphics
hardware on server and client are mismatched.

If that application fails in the same way, then you might be out of
luck.  The only other thing I could think of would be trying to run the
game in a windowed mode rather than full screen mode, if it offers such
an option.  Perhaps it won't try to use the video mode extension if it's
not running full screen.
