Hmmm... That must have been leftover detritus from an O/S upgrade, because the last time I saw a Mac X11 app that wasn't XQuartz was in OS X 10.4 Tiger. My only Macbook, which is now antiquated (are you listening, Apple? Hungry open source developer willing to test your latest stuff for free and give you a nice advert to boot) is still running Tiger, and it uses the older XFree86-based "Mac X11" app. XQuartz is shipped on the 10.5 and 10.6 (and I'm guessing 10.7) discs. Apparently Apple isn't going to ship it with 10.8, opting instead to support the community version you link to below. However, it's important to note that the version of XQuartz that Apple ships with 10.5 and 10.6 also installs as /Applications/Utilities/X11.app.
Anyhow, glad to know the mystery is solved. At some point in the future, the Mac package will probably include two versions of the viewer, the X11 version and a Java version bundled as an app. We are making good progress with getting the next-generation Java viewer's performance up to native levels.
