Title: RE: Anomaly in the default paging and spooling setup in zVM 5.1

Hello Robert,

Where are you getting the information that the paging and spooling packs are using Cylinder 0?

If it is from the Directory, that may not (probably, I mean) be correct.  I put into my directory statements for

Each of the cylinder 0 and the end cylinder  such as

00217 ***************************************************************

00218 *

00219 *  The following user ids are for mapping VIA DISKMAP command

00220 *

00221 ***************************************************************

00222 USER $ALLOC$  NOLOG

00223  MDISK A01 3390 000 001 430RES R

00224  MDISK B01 3390 000 001 430W01 R

00225  MDISK C01 3390 000 001 430W02 R

00226  MDISK D01 3390 000 001 430W03 R

00227 *

00228 USER $END$  NOLOG

00229  MDISK A01 3390 3339 001 430RES R

00230  MDISK B01 3390 3339 001 430W01 R

00231  MDISK C01 3390 3339 001 430W02 R

00232  MDISK D01 3390 3339 001 430W03 R

00233 *

00234 USER $DIRECT$ NOLOG

00235  MDISK A04 3390 001 020 430RES R

00236 *

00237 USER $SYSCKP$ NOLOG

00238  MDISK A06 3390 021 004 430RES R

This way my diskmap will show the areas I am not allowed to touch.

I believe the only true way to find out how a VM-OWNED is formatted

is to do a ICKDSF CPFORMAT without entering any info.

Subject: Anomaly in the default paging and spooling setup in zVM 5.1

I was just about to make some changes, and was "taking inventory" before changing anything, when I noticed that the default system built during the zVM 5.1 install has its paging and spooling packs using cylinder zero for page / spool. Is this normal? I had previously thought that cylinder zero should be PERM to keep anything from being written on it. Will zVM honor the drive label, and not page over it? Is there any advantage / disadvantage to this setup?

Can I, without harm to foot, change cylinder zero to perm on the SPOL volume, without disrupting the spool files stored on the volume? Should I need to?
