Please tell me I'm making a foolish mistake here. I've got an older (maintenance-wise) z/VM 4.4.0 system that runs on 3390 DASD. I was trying to make a quick change to do some FBA related testing, and added a new spool area on an FBA device.
It didn't work as expected. I was able to add to this spool space. Commands like SENDFILE and VMDUMP worked without error (usage detected by watching Q ALLOC MAP). But attempts to read a spool file that was on the FBA device failed with a "paging error on the spool device" type message, such as: peek 12 DMSWPK630S Error accessing spool file change * rdr 12 nohold 0000001 FILE CHANGED HCPCSC413E Command processing cannot complete due to a spool paging error. Lots of head scratching and doc reading ensued, trying to figure out what I'd done wrong. I eventually ended up tracing HCPCSF, trying to find out something more (no I/O error messages on OPERATOR or hardware console) when I run into an oddity with TRACE. I'm not seeing the CC being set. I figure I'll try it in 32 bit mode to see if the CC shows correctly, when I find I cannot replicate the error anymore. So back and forth I go between 32 bit and 64 bit and I find that I *always* get errors in 64 bit mode and never in 32 bit mode. Huh? I'm happy testing this item in 32 bit mode, but thought I'd put this description out here in an attempt to save someone else a Friday morning beating their head against the wall, wondering if they forgot how to add spool space.
