I would make two assumptions:
1) Most of the shops that run LINUX on 9672 and Z hardware, do it under
VM instead of LPARS, even with the larger number of LPARs available.
2) Shops which don't run LINUX still contribute significantly to the VM
revenue stream.
If shops in point 2 go away then shops in point 1 are either going to have
pay more, IBM is going to have do with less VM revenue, or support cost are
going to have to be cut to keep a positive revenue stream.
So unless product costs are really high for what in many cases are
stabilized products, why would IBM want to alienate the traditional VM
customer and upset the VM community as a whole?

We use both Connect:Direct (NDM) from Sterling Commerce and Netview/VM
from IBM. We used to have some users with roll-your-own VSAM database but
don't know if we still do. We are researching further.
Connect:Direct is our strategic data mover product -- the other
alternative I know of in VM is FTP which violates our security standards,
because you have to hard-code the passwords.
I sadly fear that this may the domino that causes the whole string to
fall. Removing VSA/VSAM kills Netview and Connect-Direct which kills ...
etc.
I realize the future of VM is Linux -- but does IBM really want to burn
their bridges behind them like this?. We still use VM/CMS -- mostly for
applications and web servers -- not for end user computing. Surely we
aren't the only such shop? How much revenue will IBM lose if everyone
rushes out and gets rid of VM/CMS?
