Being an ex-IBMer, and perhaps my opinions are part of the reason that I'm
"ex", here are some ideas or opinions. First of all, there is no single,
monolithic IBM. There are many little, relatively independent
fiefdoms. The VSAM development shop in Germany (?) almost certainly has no
reporting line to VM development. The org chart would show a very high and
unrelated connection. Second, departments and development projects operate
with a "blue money budget" which is internal IBM funny money as opposed to
"green money" which is real dollars. The development shop that owns VSAM
probably has, over the years, budgeted x amount of blue dollars
representing a number of FTE developers that, 20 years ago, was probably
aligned with real, warm bodies. The budget may still represent the same
number of FTE's. The 2006 budget numbers probably came down from on high
and the development manager saw that (s)he had to cut some percent of x
FTE's that weren't there anyway. It's a pretty easy choice to make cuts
there, especially if the product is not in support of another direct
responsibility for that development shop.
So, I don't think the it is really IBM wanting to alienate the VM customer,
it's a department that has little connection to VM/CMS having to make a
budget cut. I think that I remember in this thread, that VSAM will
continue to be there for VSE and the last I knew, VSE was a product owned
by IBM Germany. The decision doesn't effect Linux, which is also owned by
IBM Germany, I believe. Besides that, almost everyone who said that the
product that they use that would be effected by a loss of VSAM support was
talking about a non-IBM product.
It all sounds pretty simple to me.

Umm ... because they've done it before?
