Is your concern about its not working in z/VM 5 due to the discontinuance of VSAM support in VM? If so, I suspect you can save your VM/VSAM tape and program directory and install it in the new releases of VM that come along. It may not give you the warm and fuzzy feeling of a supported environment, but it will probably work.

If you are content to have your users navigate between multiple CICS sessions by choosing separate TN3270 sessions on their PCs, then probably you can get rid of TPX and VM/VTAM. If your only VSE VTAM applications are CICS, then maybe you can even get rid of VSE VTAM using the options available from the VSE TCP/IP vendors that allow direct connection to CICS without VTAM. I've not used them so I'm not in a position to comment on how well they work.

Greetings,

Cross posted to VSE-L and VMESA-L.

We use CA-TPX as our session manager under VM. This uses VSAM. We also have VM & CSI VSE TCP/IP. Right now most terminal connections come through VM/VTAM through TPX to our CICS/TS VSE applications via a virtual CTCA controlled by VSE/VTAM.

We should be getting a Z800 computer in the near future and plan to upgrade our existing zVM 3.1 & VSE/ESA 2.6.1 system.

What am I think is the possibility of eliminating (or reducing) VTAM (both VM & VSE) and from what I am reading in previous posts CA-TPX since it depends VM/VSAM. Am I correct in assuming CA-TPX will not work when going to zVM 5 environment ?

I am also vaguely aware of the BSI ITAM option to allow you to connect to CICS/TS application without VTAM.

Ideas / suggestions?

Thanks

MIke
